Moving house is a stressful business – statistics show that it’s one of the most stressful life events we go through, up there with divorce and grief!
Relocating to a new country or area can be stressful enough but by following these pointers from Shelfstore, hopefully you’ll make the process as stress free as possible.
Being organised on departure and making sure that storage is available at the other end should help to pack and clear clutter fast.
PREPARE PROPERLY
As soon as you know your moving date – get it on the kitchen calander and start preparing the family and your possessions accordingly. From this moment on, everybody should be focused on “Move Day”.
PACK PROPERLY
Packing takes longer than you think so start early and prepare to be brutal in your attack. If you’re downsizing, make sure you’re downsizing your belongings as well. Children tend to have renewed bonds with toys they haven’t played with in five years during packing sessions – be ready! Throw away the things you don’t need or want out – donate them to a hospital, a charity or friends.
Pack by rooms and label your storage boxes. Use numbers, symbols or colour codes, make sure that each room is allocated boxes with one series of numbers or colours. This saves you opening a thousand boxes upon arrival in order to locate a dummy that your three year old is throwing a tantrum about. It’s a good way to keep neighbours happy as well, the less screaming on arrival – the better!
Plus – it may be that there will be boxes that you don’t want to unpack immediately – you may want to store them for a while in your new loft. Pack wisely and label accordingly – so that you can simply move these boxes directly into their new storage space.
UNPACK PROPERLY
Ensure that someone you trust is waiting at the new house to welcome the movers and receive your belongings, with a plan of the house and knowledge /plan of attack for what goes where.
If you have to put together storage – make sure you opt for a shelving or wardrobe solution that is stress free. Shelfstore has some shelving solutions that can be assembled in minutes and will provide instant storage solutions for items without proper homes yet.
So those are our quick tips for a smooth transition. Good luck with the move – and as any good boy scout would advise, ‘Be Prepared’.
Shelfstore is a system of creating furniture, shelving and storage solutions around your ideas – in any size, and to fit your space.
