Once you’ve made the decision to sort out more storage at home, it’s often the case that you can’t quite find the shelving solution you need. If you’re an absolute whizz at DIY, you know that you can create the perfect solution, but for those of us who are totally intimidated by such a thought, there needs to be a way to design what you need.
Work out what do you need to store
Whatever space you have available, the important thing is to make the most of it, so think carefully about what exactly you need to store to make use of every inch of space. If you need to store CDs or DVDs, work out in advance how many you have to make sure the shelving solution will hold them all allowing space for your collection to grow. For books, files or any other items, such as ornaments, make sure you measure the largest you have, so you can be sure that the shelf is the right size (both depth and height) and also sturdy enough to take the weight.
Consider the size of the unit
You will need to allow space above CDs, DVDs, books and files to be able to pull them out, so consider how much space you need between shelves, as well as how high you want the shelving solution to be. You may be restricted by the size and shape of the space you have available, or you may not want anything too tall as it might prove difficult to reach up that high.
Think about the style you would like
There are many different styles of shelving solutions to choose from – free-standing, built-in, wall-hung and modular for example – so it’s down to personal taste and budget as to which one to choose. With those that are built-in, there isn’t the flexibility of being able to move or rearrange the shelving solution elsewhere in the house or if you move. Those that are free-standing can give the look of being built-in if the units are fitted flush to the wall and don’t require any DIY. If you choose modular units, there is the added benefit of being able to add to the shelving solution over time.
At Shelfstore you are able to create a shelving solution to meet your specific needs and available space using our design wizard. You can work through the steps to create a tailor-made solution which is then delivered straight to you. You can also add more shelves at a later date if you need to.
