Which Is The Most Marvellous Whizz-Bang Roald Dahl Book?

Roald Dahl Day on 13th September gives us a great reason to celebrate this author’s literary creations on what would have been his birthday and to consider what we at Shelfstore think are his most marvellous whizz-bang books!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Well who could fail to enjoy any book that has chocolate as one of the main themes in the story! Intrigued and inspired by the secrecy of the chocolate-making process, Dahl wrote this dahlicious story about the adventures of the young Charlie Bucket inside the chocolate factory of the eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka.

The Twits

Anyone who is not a fan of beards will love this book! Dahl too was no fan of beards and this story grew out of his desire to ‘do something against beards’ and so tells the humorous tale of Mr and Mrs Twit, a horrible and rather hairy couple, who play hideous pranks on each other.

The BFG

The BFG – or Big Friendly Giant – is one of Dahl’s most lovable character creations who has his own delightful and very endearing way of speaking called ‘gobblefunk’.  In the story the BFG transports a little girl named Sophie to a land of child-eating giants, but unlike the other giants he is kind and eats snozzcumbers and frobscottle instead. If you want a good giggle this story is full of outrageous humour and plenty of jokes and continues to be a much-loved tale for readers of all ages.

The BFG

Matilda

We all love stories with a happy ending and Matilda is just that! It’s a magical story about a child genius who loves books and reading and whose horrible parents and headmistress make life difficult for her and her teacher Miss Honey, but Matilda has a trick or two up her sleeve and plays pranks to get her revenge. The story shows just what you can do when you put your mind to it and we are all for the power of positivity!

Esio Trot

Magic really can happen when you say things backwards! Just read Esio Trot and find out! It was written by Dahl at a time when anyone could go into a pet shop and buy a tortoise and is a story about a shy Mr Hoppy and his love for his neighbour Mrs Silver, who has a small tortoise called Alfie who brings them together. Ahhhh!

We’d like to end with a quote from Roald Dahl, which summarises our thoughts entirely!

‘So, please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookcase on the wall’
