There’s no place like home – at least that’s what we’re all meant to think. But is your home stressing you out? Does the thought of clutter make you wince? Are you OCD about tidiness and keeping things in order?
You may be surprised to learn, but research has shown that you home can drastically affect your mood; it can even make you sick. Do you think your home could be making you depressed?
If the answer is yes to all of the above, then there could be a possibility that you’re a minimalist in the making! Being stressed out about your home is no laughing matter. Your home should be a sanctuary – a place to escape and unwind.
Here are the tell-tale signs that you’re a minimalist:
1. Simplicity and Symmetry Makes You Calm
Do you consider patterned upholstery g a visual offence? Does using polka dots bring out a headache? Our brains are complicated organs – and clutter can lead to the brain getting confused and you getting stressed.
Using a symmetrical design on the other hand will give you a happier outlook when you walk in the door. Having matching lamps beside your bed on each side is a perfect example. Minimalist homes are usually simple and symmetrical in design – this may be because there is some psychological proof to achieving balance in your interiors and how it can make your feel content. Perhaps we should all consider embracing a more permanent minimalist approach in our home design?
2. You Can’t Abide Any Clutter
Does the sight of clutter bring you out in a cold sweat? It’s true that all clutter collects dust – most people have décor items because they want to make a home feel cosy and welcoming. Unfortunately you may be doing the opposite by making your home cluttered. Someone who is a minimalist likes their homes to look clean, uncluttered to remain welcoming. This minimalist style is something you should all try to replicate if you want to achieve a less stressed home environment. Just don’t go overboard! Adopt the less is more way of thinking.
3. Certain Colours Affect Your Mood
Most minimalist interiors have a simple approach when it comes to colour – keep it light and simple. Many minimalist homes will have large windows that allow natural light to fill the room. You may also notice that wall colours are often neutral – with a splash of bold colours only used sparingly.
Who needs all the colours of the rainbow when there’s white, cream, nude and few to choose from right? If these sound like the colours you’re a sucker for, then maybe a minimalist home is the way to go for you.
4. When It Comes To Your Décor, You Prefer To Keep Things Simple
Do you believe in the old saying ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’ – if you pride yourself on the neatness of your home and are a stickler for keeping it immaculate – then it’s essential that everyday items are concealed. Stylish storage units and cupboards are your favourite things because you always know where to find your belongings and you know the storage unit looks good too.
Remember folks – minimal mess for a minimalist. This doesn’t mean getting rid of all of your personal objects or live in a sterile environment; it just means that a simple home that has balance, symmetry and minimalism will make you happier.
