It’s now officially summer and no doubt many of you have planned or are in the process of planning your summer holiday. There are quite a few of us here at Shelfstore, who relish this time of year as it means we can start to gather together ideas for our summer reading material, so that we have a good selection of books to take away on holiday. Whether you are a fan of fiction or non-fiction, paperbacks or e-books, it all about having a great book (or books!) to keep you enthralled… right up to the last page! We’ve selected a few of those we’ll be taking away with us and we hope that maybe you might pick one or two to take away with you…
Still Me by Jojo Moyes
For those of you, who enjoyed Me Before You and After You, Still Me – a No. 1 Sunday Times bestseller – must surely be one for your list. It finds Lou Clark in New York, many miles away from London and her boyfriend Sam. She’s working for a man whose wife, Lou knows, is keeping a secret from him. What Lou doesn’t know is that she’s about to meet someone, who will turn her whole life upside down.
Can You Hear Me? by Elena Varvello
If you like a book that you can read in (almost) one sitting, then look no further. Elena Varvello’s debut novel is described as a thriller and is a riveting coming-of-age story, which follows Elia, a teenager, during a scorching Italian summer.
This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries Of A Junior Doctor by Adam Kay
This Is Going To Hurt: Secret Diaries Of A Junior Doctor is yet another No. 1 Sunday Times bestseller and is the often hilarious, at times horrifying and occasionally heartbreaking diaries of a former NHS junior doctor, and the story of why he decided to hang up his stethoscope.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie Barrows
If you haven’t seen the film – or even if you have – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society is well worth a read. This historical novel is set in 1946 at the time of the German occupation of the Channel Islands and is composed of letters written from one character to another, which gradually draws together two different worlds.
Heartburn by Nora Ephron
This autobiographical novel by Nora Ephron, Oscar-nominated screenwriter (When Harry Met Sally) and successful director (Sleepless in Seattle), is a bittersweet and very funny book about the breakdown of her marriage after her husband’s infidelity. She takes a miserable and very personal situation and turns it into a funny and inspiring story.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
This is a story that depicts the loneliness of life, and what you quickly discover is that in fact Eleanor Oliphant is far from fine, but one simple act of kindness is going change things completely for Eleanor. It’s a funny and touching read and one that you won’t want to put down until you’ve finished it.
