Identify Your Interior Design Style

Interior design series: Modern living roomThere’s a lot to consider when embarking on new home improvement projects. One of the main aspects is identifying your interior style – for this you need to start thinking about whether you take hands on approach to decorating, or whether you prefer to take advice from the professionals…

Everyone has their own tastes and it’s up to you to recognise them – after all, we all have a creative streak, but sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to know the look you want to create.

If you’re not sure what your style is, here’s a few ways to help build a clearer picture of the direction you may want to go.

  • Consider Your Passions

The best style to have is your own! Your home should be an extension and reflection of yourself – so be sure to let your taste run wild! Just remember that the design you choose fits you well so that you can feel truly relaxed in your home.

To get you started, think about how you like to make use of your space and how this can be incorporated into your home’s décor.

  • Explore the Trends

Your home should be personal – but that doesn’t mean you can’t take inspiration from others. Be inspired – keep up with the latest trends!

This creative process is about looking around to find the things that you love – whether you’ve taken it from a shop window, or been shown a clever trick by a friend, or even ripping out the pages of your favourite House to Home Magazine.

Just be sure to take note of what catches your eye and analyse exactly what you need to do to get the idea you want put in place in your own home!  Pinterest is a great resource for creating trend or mood boards – so perhaps start pinning your ideas too.

  • Imagine Your Dream Home

Don’t worry about costs at the moment – think about what your dream home would have right to the very tiny details, from the window mouldings, to the furniture and storage solutions, right down to the texture of the floors.

There are many ways to incorporate the things you love about your imaginary dream home into your own home. The biggest job is to realise what exactly it is that you want and how to incorporate it with your existing furnishings.

  • Look for Common Threads

When doing all the prep work to identify your interior design style, be sure to look among the things you treasure and find patterns in the design, colours, shapes, materials etc.

You may find yourself attracted to a blend of styles rather than just one; as you delve into rooms, note which features appeal to you. This will help you translate your taste into smart decorating choices.

  • Determine Your Budget

It’s important to know what your financial limitations are before you start getting carried away with your grand plans, although working to a budget doesn’t mean that you can’t create the look that you want.

If money is tight, take some time to consider which focal features will have the biggest impact on the room and concentrate your budget on making that count!

When it comes to your home’s interior design, it’s worth taking some time to get it right. So get to know your style and then start to experiment with a few different ideas until something starts to come together. One thing is for certain, you’ll know it when you see it!
