How to Design the Perfect Home Office

home office 1212Creating the perfect home office environment to meet your needs as well as looking stylish can be tricky. You want a space where you can feel professional and be productive, a “work only” dedicated area.

When you decide to create your own customised office space, there are a number of considerations you need to take on board beforehand:

1.       Block Out Distractions

First of all, you need to think of an office as a valuable addition to your home, not a waste of living space.  It’s unfair to ask your children to do their homework or yourself to do your own work sprawled out on the kitchen table when the rest of the family are bustling through- having conversations and running around.

Equally it is difficult to study when your own distractions- mobile, TV, magazines etc are close by and competing for your attention. The idea of having a home office is to have somewhere quiet and tranquil to hide, so that you can better concentrate on work or study.

 2.       Colours

Colour is of vital importance to setting the right mood. If you paint your home office in post-office red, then your heart will be racing – this is the colour of fast food joints – you get in, eat fast and then move on.

What you need is something decidedly more tranquil to help you concentrate, like a pastel colour – light powder blue or mint or just plain white, for instance. These colours are associated with peacefulness and help focus the mind.

3.       Light

It is advisable to have a light and airy place where you can actually see what you are doing on the one hand and not have any glare on your computer screen or in your eyes on the other.

Make sure you have adequate lighting and you are positioned in the right way to take advantage of it.

4.       Storage

Throwing your projects on the floor or scattering documents across the couch is going to mean that you are very disorganised.

It would be useful to have some sort of shelving unit to fit the tightest loft space or the largest room and brilliantly organise your storage with nice boxes, baskets or trays. Check out Shelfstore’s handy design wizard  and create your very own shelving system – the possibilities are only limited by your imagination, so start thinking creatively.

5.       Ambiance

Everybody works in different ways and there is something about creating a custom-atmosphere for your own home office. Some people work best when there is a white noise- soft music or mood tapes playing in the background.  Or even a particular smell- whether from an atomiser or incense, or just back coffee.

Whatever space you decide upon for your office, be assured that ShelfStore can help you solve your storage solutions!
