So you’ve made the big decision to move to university – and you’ve decided to move into a house!
Moving into a student house is one of the most exciting experiences you’re likely to encounter. After all, what could be better than moving into your own place, with a hand full of your friends and without parents?
Moving out of that childhood bedroom into a house with roommates is the first step to becoming who you are and embracing your first home.
As exciting as it is, this change is not always easy to cope with. The first few days can be quite bewildering with so many meetings, a sea of new faces, things to do and finding your way around the campus!

1. Be organised from the start
University life demands a high level of self-organisation because you have so much freedom. Think about how you divide up your time and get clear how many hours a week of academic work you need to put in.
Doing so – will help you to make the most of your free time as well as enjoying your new home.
2. Streamline: De-clutter.
The number one thing you’ll need to do to start making the place feel like your own and pack away what’s not needed.
When you look around the room, the spots where your eye comes to rest – the top of coffee table, the mantle, etc. – should be used to display things that remind you that you’re in your home…not someone else’s.
Some shelving could also come in handy – as a great way for you to display all these wonderful things that remind you of home as well as your knick knack collections!
3. Find storage space.
Try buying handy storage spaces that you can tuck away and make the most of the small space you have available in your new home – you may want to add some sort of shelving or storage device that is tall so that you can work with height and make the most of the space you have.
For smaller items that you want to stash out of sight, try other storage solutions such as drawers or perhaps a bureau.
While doing so, keep in mind – this is a great opportunity to do lots of exciting décor stuff without making any major financial investments!
4. Keep it tidy
Students have a bad name when it comes to looking after rented property – therefore you should make an effort to keep everything tidy and in good condition – not just for the duration of time that you live there, but when you move out.
Remember landlords won’t be shy to withhold your deposit on the property if you’ve trashed it, so make sure the house is well looked after!
