The 2nd April celebrates international Children’s Book Day – a day to inspire a love of reading, celebrate children’s books and to encourage children to read.
But why is it so important to get your children to read?
Studies have shown that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance and suggests that children who read for enjoyment tend to perform better at school.
So if you, like most parents, want your child to grow up to be intelligent, then there are a few ways you can help boost your child’s learning potential through reading. The team at Shelfstore have put together a few tips that will help make books an integral part of your children’s lives…
- Read aloud to your child
It’s important to spend this time with your child so that you can talk about the words, pictures and together, you can share ideas about the book. Even reading to your baby from birth increases their exposure to language. Not only is reading together a great learning activity but it will bring the two of you closer together.
- Surround your child with books
Dedicate an area in your home as the reading corner – a place you and/or your child can go to relax and get stuck into a good book. It’s also a good idea to go to the library or bookshop and get some new books in – this way reading becomes a habit.
