The Danish concept of ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hue-gah’) has captured the imagination of the interior design world and so given Shelfstore’s Scandinavian connection, we decided to find out why everyone is so interested in it. But what is it exactly? Well firstly it’s not a word that you can translate literally – it’s more a concept or a way of living. Hygge means the creation of a warm, pleasant and comfortable atmosphere, where cosy social gatherings and intimate get-togethers with family and friends are key. Here’s how you can ‘hygge’ your home just like the Danes – the happiest nation in the world!
The power of light
Light is a critical element in the hygge approach and whether you use lamps or candles, it is the quickest and easiest way to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. Use floor lamps, table lamps, pendants, wall lights and candles, dotted around at various levels on side tables, cabinets and bookcases and combine to create different moods and settings, and of course daylight can be incorporated into your scheme too.
Accessorise to add texture
Soft wool cushions and fluffy wool throws, together with chunky knits and smooth velvet create beautifully textured surfaces that add an extra dimension to your interior and help to create that perfect warm and cosy environment in which to relax. Drape your throws over your sofa or keep them close by in a basket for you or your guests to grab when you need them.
Less is more!
These are the absolute keywords when creating hygge. Clear out clutter and keep your main living space simple and tidy. Make the most of tiny spaces or awkward corners – under the stairs for example – to create more storage for your books or to display your favourite knickknacks.
So cosy up and get together with friends for coffee or dinner or find a warm comfortable corner to curl up with a good book and experience the wonder of hygge for yourself.
