The Genius of Pine

When we think about pine trees, we think about them laden in festive baubles and bells and littered with presents – but they actually serve a very different purpose.

They produce the wood that we use to make an abundance of furniture.

Pinewood is wood from an evergreen tree called a pine. The wood is especially soft and often used for carving or whittling but most often for furniture, flooring and other carpentry projects.

The type of wood you choose determines the beauty and strength of your finished piece of furniture. Many varieties of wood are available, and each has its own properties – but which one to choose?

Here are 6 reasons why we would recommend using pine in your home, other than it being Christmas!

It’s solid and dependable – Like most things that are dear to our hearts; pine is a wood that you can rely on to hold the weight of everyday living. Chest of drawers, dressers and dining tables need to be strong and sturdy to withstand children, pets and disastrous DIY husbands.

It can stand the test of time – pine lasts for a lifetime, you won’t have to spend money or time replacing items of furniture that have become part of the family over the years.

It fits in well! – Since pine’s natural colour is neutral, it blends very well with other furniture materials. It also works well with most paint colours and wallpaper patterns so you needn’t worry about rooms that have already been decorated.

It’s easy to paint – If you’re looking to decorate your pine furniture, it couldn’t be simpler – paint takes very well to pine wood because of its open grain. Alternatively you can varnish or stain pine furniture and still decorate it in its more natural form.

It’s eco-friendly – Deforestation is a huge problem in today’s world, we all need to use wood – but why not use a wood that is growing at a faster rate than most? Pine is a coniferous wood that grows at a much faster and straighter rate than other hardwoods, giving our forests a chance to keep up with the demand. At Shelfstore all the pine we use comes from environmentally managed forests.

It’s easy to work with – softwoods like pine are generally a lot easier to work with, making sawing a pleasure! The open grain in the wood gives a better grip for adhesives and it will readily absorb preservatives, stains and paints (as mentioned above)

Bearing all that in mind, we thought we’d let you know that at Shelfstore all our shelving is made of solid, dependable pine and finished with a strong clear varnish. Our shelving system is incredibly strong. Our wood is grown in northern Scandinavia, which produces a tight ring growth; we then engineer and finish the shelves, adding further strength. We also use only high quality metal supports, ensuring an unrivalled long-term sturdiness.

So don’t wait for Christmas.
